7.1 MEANING AND TYPES OF BEHAVIOUR

BEHAVIOUR

Refers to actions or conducts demonstrated by an individual in response to internal or  extremal stimuli.

Ø  One's behaviour is reflected in the way one dresses, talks, eats, and interacts with others in different Situations.

 

TYPES OF  BEHAVIOUR

There are two types of behavior namely;

  1. Proper behavior
  2. Improper behavior 
  3. PROPER BEHAVIOR

Refers to acts or manners which are considered positive and acceptable in the society.

  1. Examples of positive acts includes being honest, working hard, loving others, cooperating with others and being obedient

II. IMPROPER BEHAVIOR

Refers to acts or manners which are considered negative and not acceptable in the society.

Ø  These manners includes drug abuse, prostitution, corruption, theft, selfishness, robbery, truancy, laziness and alcoholism

FACTORS INFLUENCING OUR BEHAVIOUR

  1. Genetic inheritance

Human beings inherit essential features from their fore parents. These features may affect how individuals behave.

ii. Parental care

Parents who are loving, hardworking, cooperative and caring may influence their children to have proper behaviour. While those  who are lazy, careless and drunk are likely to influence their children to adopt improper behaviour.

iii. Peer group

Some people behave improperly because of ignorance. Education enables people to learn how to behave properly.

v. Religious teachings

 Religious teachings influence people to have proper behaviour. For example people are taught to love each other, be tolerant, to be faithful and to forgive

vi. Economic status

Economic hardship makes people to engage in illegal acts such as drug abuse, theft, corruption, prostitution and terrorism. Sometimes rich people may  use               their economic power to abuse other people’s rights.

vii. Development of science and technology

The use of television, newspaper, computers or smart phones has lead people to have good or bad behaviour

7.2 ELEMENTS OF PROPER BEHAVIOUR

(a)    Helping parents with domestic activities

(b)    Taking care of disabled people

(c)     Working hard while doing school and home activities

(d)    Being patriotic to your country

 

IMPORTANCE OF BEHAVING PROPERLY

  1. Reduces crime and brings about peace and harmony
  2. Develops a sense of love and respects among society
  3. Contributes to development and prosperity
  4. Promotes integrity and solidarity among the community
  5. Makes people patriotic to their countries
  6. Promotes tolerance and happiness among peoples in the society
  7. Protects people from the diseases

ELEMENTS OR INDICATORS OF IMPROPER BEHAVIOUR

a)       Taking someone else’s property without consent

b)      Being aggressive and fighting with others

c)       Isolating your fellow students of their poor  performance

d)      Alcoholism and taking illegal drugs

e)      Being silent about mistreatment or abuse

f)        Disclosing secrets of parents about their abusive behaviour

g)       Taking drugs which have not been prescribed by a doctor

CONSEQUENCES OR IMPROPER BEHAVIOUR

  1. Increasing social crime
  2. Slowing down economic development
  3. Causing health problems
  4. Leading to low efficiency and performance
  5. Leading to death
  6. Increasing discriminatory acts

WAYS OF AVOIDING IMPROPER BEHAVIOUR

  1. Following religious teachings
  2. Seeking guidance and counselling
  3. Hardworking
  4.  maintaining good parental care
  5. Forming healthy friendship
  6. Maintaining self-discipline

7.3 RESPONSIBLE DECISION MAKING

 Decision making

Is a process of selecting a best choice out of many available options. This includes logical reasoning

Rational decision-making

Is the process of choosing the best choices in life.

Ø  This involves making logical choice aimed at achieving one’s goals. 

RATIONAL DECISION-MAKING STEPS

Making rational decisions requires one to follow the following steps;

a)       Identify problem

You need a clear definition of the issue at hand or the problem that you want to solve

b) Gathering relevant information

Make sure that you collect relevant information about what you want to do. Information can be obtained through reading books, newspapers, listening to news and talking to other people

c) Develop alternatives / defining the problem

As you collect information, you will find possible causes of the problem.

 

d) Evaluate the alternatives

Try to assess the strengths and weakness of each alternative then you chose the one which will help you to solve the problem.

e) Take action/ implement the chosen alternative

After choosing the best alternative, take action to implement the strategy you have chosen

f) Review the decision you have made

Evaluate the outcome of your decision. If the decision has not helped you to address the problem, you may be required to make a new decision.

IMPORTANCE OF MAKING RATIONAL / RESPONSIBLE DECISIONS

  1. It helps to build a sense of commitment and cooperation among society members
  2. It promotes democracy
  3. It promote peace and harmony
  4. It promote personal development
  5. It help to develop confidence and happiness
  6. It reduces the number of mistakes

  1. Active listening skills
  2. Time management skills
  3. Sharing skills
  4. Critical thinking skills
  5. Creative thinking skills
  6. Problem-solving skills

WAYS OF AVOIDING MAKING IRRATIONAL DECISIONS

  1. Seek relevant information
  2. Avoiding making common mistakes
  3. Learn from previous mistake
  4. Do self-assessment
  5. Observe time
  6. Predict the outcomes
